About 13 years ago I started a story that I had in my mind and could find nothing like it online. A mother's kid was bullied, originally she goes to the hospital worried about him when she was called to come because her son had a broken arm from an accident. She tried to ask her son what happened, he would not answer so she followed him to school and saw bully shove him into the gutter, breaking the cast and most likely fracturing the arm again. Problem was...she is a latent sadist who had to seek help in the past but gets into it with the bully and they (I suppose cucked her son, but I never got into that angle) start bulllying him together. Its called Bully gets Wimp's Mom and the first two chapters are still up on Lit. as times had not caught up with the idea of even studying this kind of behavior as a psychological abnormality which takes over the Mom. So, some of it was removed (fantasy sequences within dreams an everything in the story is with adults, no kids). So far, in tat time I have had roughly 800,000 views and have been starting to work on some other things in the genre and trying again. One of which came from DS himself, when he threw some ides out there and I asked for him to allow me to do the one which I have now "affectionately" titled Bully Island.

I could see some version of this happening. Sarah did mention that Lester has been complete professional at work, which could be a hint. Other angle is Lester having a hard time at hospital (thanks to Richard & Mary) so genuinely couldn't pay more attention to Sarah.

That's an interesting thought. Everybody gets corrupted to Lester's level in this story but I never thought Lester's corruption will not be more depravity but the other way: him going 'nice' which could ultimately lead his downfall

But seriously, deserted Island is another saturated genre that I'm fond of. It seems to me most of the authors concentrate on the people deserted that they miss the most important character: the island itself. I'm tired of generic tropical island with unlimited food and water. One don't have to go full "Lost" with the backstory but atleast make it something like Socotra Island where it's been secluded long enough it developed its own biodiversity (imagine them encountering rare aphrodisiac fruit, a bird that can mimic notices the bully jerking off to mom and mimics his moaning her name everytime it sees him) Or like Easter islands with full of ruins and drawings from a tribe that left the place for reasons. If the mom character is an academic, this will make her interested in the island more than getting out and the bully to rely more on her despite his hatred as she understand the island more. Add a predator like komodo dragon, make the resources limited to add a ticking clock, anything other than them immediately building a treehouse and starts fucking. Just some suggestions. Because Dan is not corrupt, nor is he deceitful or criminal.
He has left his town and his neighbourhood for the good of his family - so that they don't lose their house, so that the family's standard of living doesn't fall - to seek new professional challenges.
I see Dan as a caring family man who, contrary to the prevailing opinion, sacrifices himself for the good of his family. He has put his own well-being, his own desires and pleasures in the background.

Contrary to what you've said, I don't think he's a failure, a loser, a good-for-nothing and he isn't stupid - techno-challenged yes, but not stupid. However he absolutely isn't a WE-man. One could make the argument he's more corrupt than Lester - at least Lester doesn't hide what he wants. Dan and Sarah are in this situation because of Dan's fantasy, and bc Sarah is (at the beginning) a loving wife who would do anything for him.
There are two reasons Dan's character is portrayed this way: the obvious one is if his character had been written as an upstanding family man, the story would have been over after the first chapter. But within the story he's a flawed human, just like everyone else in this story - he tempted fate bc of his desire to see his wife with another man and now he's paying the butcher's bill.
Now the real question is will Dan finally learn his lesson and earn redemption. Time (and 30 more chapters lol) will tell.

Yeah I don't think it will happen - doesn't seem to fit a dark ending. But it would be interesting if he actually fell in love with Sarah and then made a mistake allowing her to see him for the monster he is. On second thought that would be a dark ending for Lester's character - he had everything and lost it thru his own actions.

I'm curious what do others think Sarah's hard line in the sand would be, like what would snap her out of Lester's control and make her give it up? (Beyond the obvious one of her children being threatened.)

In fantasy land sure, but in reality I would pump the brakes calling Dan a caring family man. Any evidence presented has been weak in my book. Obvious one: tell me one parent who doesn’t brag about their kids to anyone including Lester? I have not seen one evidence of Lester being sick and tired of Dan bragging about his girls or on FaceTime/Skype with them regarding their day or schoolwork. You have to ask what is the underlying reason Dan would chose Chicago over finding one or multiple jobs in Middleton to keep his family together. How are they saving money by paying out additional rent, utilities, food, and moving/travel expenses on top of their current Middleton expenses? It’s all about the man bringing in the income however no amount of income will fully offset the financial and emotional burdens. This antiquated parenting model regarding the father may work for some circumstances, but wouldn’t apply to this application. Dan doesn’t work a position like a roughneck on the Alaskan oil fields or fisherman on the Bering Straits. Dan’s job is physically close to home. Why couldn’t Dan and Sarah keep the family together or at the very least negotiated a moving package with Walt before accepting a job in Chicago. All this makes Dan sound weak. As a recently hired worker for an out of state company. I negotiated a moving package as part of my acceptance even though I had no leverage. I took a pay cut at my new job, but it didn’t deter me from moving my family with me. My world would not be complete without my family there.
